This project was a challenge posed by an IDEAS class at Wesleyan: construct a structurally sound and visually interesting wall sconce shade exclusively out of paper, without any tape or other materials. I first constructed a sort of "sub-frame" of paper rolled into tubes to take advantage of their lateral strength, and then layered paper over the top to diffuse the light projected forward, and laser-cut two side panels to project a shadow pattern onto the wall. I also laser engraved a series of Sierpiński triangles onto the front surface to provide decoration while the fixture is powered off, as I thought that a light fixture ought to have a visual purpose during both power states.
